FAQs

I’ve found a hedgehog out in the daytime what do I do ?

Hedgehogs are nocturnal, which means they shouldn’t be out in the daytime. There are exceptions like pregnant females nesting before they gives birth, or a new mum having a rest from her litter and a drink and bite to eat.

If the hog is lethargic, sunbathing, wobbly, has flies round it or is young & on its own it needs help.

Please handle the hog using gloves or a towel and pop it in a high-sided box. Offer it water only (no food) and something to bury under. Please call a rescue ASAP. DO NOT hold on to the hedgehog longer than needed - timing is imperative if we are going to be able to save it’s life.

What food should I offer my visiting hogs

Please provide fresh drinking water in shallow bowls and cat biscuits to support feed

Should I be concerned seeing a hog out in October / November at night ?

Hogs need to be a certain weight before they can fully hibernate. 600g + is ideal. Please always leave water and cat biscuits out, regardless of the weather, as not all hogs will hibernate.

I have spotted a hedgehog in my garden and it has a couple of ticks on it does it need help?

It is common for hedgehogs to have a few ticks. If you spot a hedgehog with more than 10 ticks, it will need to come to a rescue to have them removed and have a general health assessment.
