About us

Welcome to Smoggy Hogs Teesside, a small, but rapidly growing hedgehog rescue. We currently have 3 rehabbers and 5 foster mums

We operate over all TS postcodes and are always available for help and advice.

What is a rehabber?

We provide the initial triage of the hedgehog; analyse stool samples, diagnose where possible and treat with the guidance of our vets - always in line with the gold standard set by Vale Wildlife Hospital & Rehabilitation Centre. Once a hog gets a clean bill of health they will be passed to a foster mum.

What is a foster mum?

A foster mum cares for the hedgehogs once all medications have been completed.

They do minimal handling of the hedgehog and fatten it up ready for release. This entails weighing the hog daily to ensure they are gaining weight consistently.

In summer months a hedgehog won’t be released until it has reached a weight of 500g. This changes in autumn /winter when an ideal release weight is 600g, together with the added stipulation that there needs to be 5 straight days of 5 degrees or higher temperatures to allow the hedgehog time to make a nest.
